Squigs is Off-Broadway...

Well, Squigs' art is Off-Broadway. I created the logo art and caricatures that are used on programs, on Broadway.Com, and the marquee at St. Luke's Theatre on 46th Street between 8th & 9th (Restaurant Row) in NYC's theatre district. Pretty exciting... my first NY marquee!

The show is Fabulous Divas of Broadway Starring Alan Palmer. In the show, one man (Alan) portrays a couple dozen Broadway leading ladies from the Golden Age through modern times. I'm hoping my doodles (coupled with a great location) put some butts in the seats.

Alan asked me to work on the project last year and I had to decline at the time because I was swamped. After another artist dropped the ball – and weeks before he headed to NYC – Alan asked if I could jump back in. I created the title lettering and caricatures of five ladies – Ethel Merman, Carol Channing, Betty Buckley, Patti LuPone, and Liza Minnelli. For some reason Liza didn't make the marquee, but she's on the program. Anyway... It's mighty fun and I'm really happy that my work can be seen just down the street from Broadway. [Thanks to Brotha Eric Anderson and Michael Buchanan for some great shots!]

A peek...

I'm taking a break from the drawing board. The sun is out and the breezes are blowing. I'm sitting here at my desk sipping my coffee and momentarily ignoring my work load. But in the mean time, I thought I'd post a glimpse at the current project, Clean Riverside, an educational comic book on many ways that kids (and all of us) can do our part to make the world a cleaner and better place. (That's the cover there.) The folks at Riverside Public Utilities have been fantastic clients, challenging me to create engaging visuals for numerous fun and informative campaigns. I've created an energy sucking vampire, a cross section of a green house, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with a compact fluorescent light bulb for a nose, and the predecessor to this project, Green Riverside. Fun and helpful and satisfying. I'm hoping the Clean Riverside project will be able to join the library by the end of the week.
